Heat Stress in Poultry

Limiting the Impact of Heat Stress on Poultry

Poultry are particularly sensitive to heat due to their inability to sweat, their high metabolism, small skin surface, and plumage.

Understanding the Mechanisms of Heat Stress in Poultry

When poultry’s thermoregulation is overwhelmed, early and often invisible disturbances appear: oxidative stress, inflammation, impaired digestive safety, weakened immunity, and energy metabolism imbalances.

These impairments permanently affect intestinal health, reduce nutrient absorption, and degrade performance, even before visible signs appear: panting, decreased feed intake, increased water consumption.

Measuring and Evaluating Heat Stress

Thermal comfort does not depend solely on temperature, but also on humidity, which is integrated into the THI (Temperature Humidity Index). A THI above 73 already represents a severe risk, even at 24–25°C. In addition to degrading poultry health, heat stress does not impact all sectors in the same way.

In broiler poultry, it degrades feed efficiency, extends the batch duration, and alters carcass quality. In laying hens and breeders, it affects the laying rate, fertility, and egg quality. The growth/finishing and laying phases are particularly sensitive due to high metabolism.

Adapting Formulation to Combat Heat Stress

Diet is a key factor in minimising the effects of heat stress and promoting recovery. Or en période de chaleur, la baisse d’ingestion compromet la couverture des besoins et l’équilibre électrolytique.

CCPA thus adapts the feed formulation during these critical phases, through energy concentration and targeted adjustments of protein, mineral, and vitamin intake.

Feed Solutions and Nutritional Solutions to Support Animals During Heat Stress Periods

Based on its knowledge of physiology and its phyto-expertise, CCPA develops solutions adapted to animal thermoregulation. In poultry, during periods of oxidative stress and inflammation, Feedstim Poultry combines patented Scutellaria Baicalensis and turmeric to support performance and intestinal integrity.

This synergistic combination offers a comprehensive action, limiting the economic consequences of heat stress. Additionally, StimFlash®, rich in vitamins and antioxidants, can be used in drinking water during critical phases to support animal performance.

Anticipating and Managing Heat Stress Episodes

Anticipating heat stress episodes allows for rapid adaptation of farming practices (ventilation, feeding schedules, nutritional solutions). CCPA also offers an alert tool called Thermo® Tool that integrates weather forecasts, location, and poultry type to assist in managing risk periods, displaying the THI in real-time and the risk level according to the type of production.
