Deteriorated CSP culvert on Hwy 417 replaced with precast concrete box culvert

A deteriorated 4370mm x 2870mm corrugated steel pipe culvert on Highway 17, approximately 50km east of Ottawa and 2km east of Exit 58 (Hwy 138 to Cornwall) was replaced by a precast concrete box culvert in the fall, 2011. The 98.6m culvert is comprised of 58 pieces of 4200mm x 3000mm x 1.7m long precast boxes weighing almost 21 tonnes each. Pieces included flush ends, pieces with holes, and precast cut-off walls. The weight of the system is 1,206 tonnes. M-Con Products Inc. supplied the precast products for construction of the culvert by R.W. Tomlinson of Gloucester, Ontario.
The Foundations Investigation Report by Golder Associates of Ottawa noted that, "There are no signs of pavement distress within the eastbound and westbound lanes above the culvert.” A report by D.M. Willis Associates Ltd., however, reported that that there were indications of structural distress of the CSP culvert in the form of localized deformations at the crown of the pipe arch as well as severe corrosion along the base of the culvert below the water line."
The job was installed in three stages: median segment (with one lane of traffic flowing in each direction), then the north end and south end. The culvert was shipped with pieces arriving every 30 minutes.
